The 1973 amendments to the Older Americans Act mandated states to establish Area Agencies on Aging based on units known as Planning and Service Areas. Pennsylvania chose to designate counties as these Planning and Service Areas.
As a result of the efforts of the Allegheny Council on Aging, the Blair County Task Force and the Blair County Commissioners, Blair Senior Services, Inc. was established in 1974. The first staff members were hired in July 1974, and the Agency had its official opening the following October.
The Blair County Board of Commissioners established the Agency as a private nonprofit corporation. However, the County Commissioners continue their active support of, and interest in, the Agency and its programs.
The years since 1974 have seen a continuous growth in the quantity and quality of services provided by the Agency. The 1974 budget of $53,000 for the establishment of aging services has now become an annual budget of approximately $11 Million for the 2009-2010 fiscal year.
Blair Senior Services relies on community support for its fundraising efforts so that it can continue to meet the changing and growing needs of older adults in Blair County. |
