Rick “Mac” MacIntyre

Rick “Mac” MacIntyre has been a dedicated Van Driver for Blair Senior Services, Inc. for 32 years.
Mac, who began driving when things were much different, reflected back on the differences when he started as a driver: “The whole operation has just changed completely. We are now working on a more computerized system, so now there’s computer schedules instead of paper,” he said. “I tell the new drivers they’re lucky, because before we didn’t have a garage, so we’d have to clean off our vans in the winter time just like everyone else. Now, we report to work and we have a nice, dry van to start up and move on with our day.”
Before Mac started as a Van Driver, he worked at United Service Company, a linen supply company out of Johnstown. Looking for a career change, he found out about the job through his neighbor and has worked as a driver ever since, into his retirement years.
Mac’s favorite aspect of his job is the connection he feels with his riders. “I really like the people you meet and the interaction you have with the consumers. I’ve had a lot of friendships with consumers since I’ve worked here for 32 years,” Mac said.
Just by speaking with Mac uncovers his passion and love for driving for Blair Senior Services, Inc. His biggest accomplishment over the course of his career is a clean driving record.
“Over 32 years of driving and I’ve never had an accident,” Mac said. “I’m kind of proud of that.”
Not only is this a great accomplishment overall, but especially in today’s world with all of the distractions everyday drivers face. “Today my biggest challenges are distracted drivers and making sure I keep my consumers safe,” Mac said. “It’s definitely harder to drive today than what it was when I started. We have to be very diligent as drivers and drive very defensively to ensure everyone stays safe on the road.”
One of the things Mac would like to remind readers about Blair Senior Services, Inc. Transportation Services is that they can take you to more than just doctor’s appointments. “We can provide trips to family visits, hair appointments, the store… you name it. If you qualify, we can take you,” Mac shared. To inquire about transportation services, call Blair Senior Services, Inc.’s Transportation Office at 814-695-3500.

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Aging today announced that older adults who will soon be turning 65 and are not yet enrolled in Medicare can attend a free virtual event to learn about their healthcare coverage options when enrolling for Medicare.

The "Welcome to Medicare" event on June 23, open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., will feature national presentations from the State Health Insurance Assistance Programs on Medicare eligibility, enrollment and coverage options. Representatives will be available to answer questions and assist older adults with information to enable them to make choices on Medicare coverage that best meets their needs and lowers their costs.

In Pennsylvania, this program is known as APPRISE. Throughout the national presentation, staff from APPRISE will host an exhibit for Pennsylvania and will respond to Medicare questions and provide information about the program. The Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly (CARIE) – Pennsylvania's Senior Medicare Patrol – also will join APPRISE to discuss Medicare fraud prevention.

"We encourage anyone who is turning 65 soon to join our Virtual Welcome to Medicare Fair. Pennsylvania's Medicare Counseling Program is here to help older adults learn about signing up and navigating the complexities of Medicare, avoiding late enrollment penalties, and preventing fraud," said Susan Neff, APPRISE director. "We also invite those who attend to visit the Pennsylvania-specific virtual exhibit at any time during the event. The APPRISE and CARIE staff look forward to chatting with seniors about their Medicare enrollment concerns."

Older adults can register for this event here

The APPRISE Program has nearly 800 trained counselors in the commonwealth who provide free, confidential, objective, and easy-to-understand information about original Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, prescription drug plans, and Medicare Supplement plans, and allows Medicare beneficiaries to compare plans and determine what best meets their needs and save them money.
